Security Cameras, Who's Keeping An Eye On Your Business?

by Edson Buchanan

If you're a small business owner, you may not know that one of the most important and costly issues you face is loss prevention. Many small business owners imagine that they are immune to the everyday problems caused by theft, vandalism, and embezzlement. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and a recent study has suggested that small businesses lose billions of dollars a year for just these reasons. Below, we have outlined our top four tips for small business owners who are looking into purchasing a security system.

1. Select a known and respected company for your security needs : many security companies promote themselves strictly on the basis of cost savings. While cost is of course an important considerations, making sure that you're getting what you're paying for is far more vital. If you consult with your small business insurance agency for a recommendation on a respected security firm, you'll be much more pleased with the result.

2. Don't do it yourself: many business owners try to save money by setting up their own " security system ". They use cheap web cameras or off the shelf solutions and expect to obtain high-quality results. However, they discover that it is very time intensive to obtain these results -- they must spend much of their valuable time watching security videos, without a clear idea of what they are looking for. Instead of doing it yourself, spend a little extra and pay a firm to do it for you -- you'll be glad you did.

3. Location is key: in loss prevention, it is important to ensure that every single location in your business is covered by security cameras. Some business owners might try to keep down costs by using a small number of security cameras. Instead, you should always remember that thieves will take advantage of this situation in order to rob you blind; if you only have one or two cameras, criminals will simply target all of your camera-free areas.

4. Monitor both employees and customers: it is important to remember that loss prevention must be aimed both inward and outward as both employees and customers can be potential sources of loss. If you are only aiming your security cameras at your merchandise then a bad seed among your employees could easily steal from you. Of course if you are only monitoring you employees than a single theft from the outside can take down your business.

We hope that these suggestions will help you decide on a comprehensive solution. We know that the most important goal for a small business owner is to manage costs. But don't forget that the key to staying on top of loss prevention is implementing strong security. A little investment in security will pay dividends by saving thousands and thousands of dollars in shrinkage.

One of the most important aspects of small business is loss prevention. It's important for business owners to think about. Below, we have some tips for businesses considering installing a security system. 1.Research reputable security companies. Cost is always important, but it's more important to get your money's worth. 2.Don't do it on your own. Use a trusted company to do it for you. 3.Placement of security cameras is very important. All areas must be covered. 4.Last but not least, monitor your employees and customers. You don't want to be robbed blind by an employee. I hope you've found these tips useful and will use them to make an educated decision.
